MSCONFIG:

RESTORE THE OPERATING SYSTEM TO A PREVIOUS STATE IN WINDOWS XP:

  • Log on to the system as Administrator.

  • Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, click System Restore.

  • System Restore window displays, select Restore my computer to an earlier time and click Next.

  • Select a Restore Point window displays, select the most recent system checkpoint in the list and then click Next. A System Restore message appears that lists all changes that System Restore will make. Select OK.

  • On the Confirm Restore Point Selection window, click Next. System Restore will restore your previous Windows XP configuration and restart the computer.

  • After restart, login as Administrator, the System Restore Restoration Complete window appears, click OK.

    This deletes all the installed programs or any changes done after the selected previous date.

TO UNDO THE RESTORATION:

  • Log on to the system as Administrator.

  • Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, click System Restore.

  • System Restore window appears; select Undo my last restoration and click Next. A System Restore message may appear that lists all changes that System Restore will make, click OK.

  • On the Confirm Restoration Undo window, click Next. System Restore restores the original Windows XP state and restart the computer.

  • After restart login as Administrator, the System Restore Undo Complete window appears, click OK.

SAFE MODE BOOT:

Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers, to start Windows so that you can modify the registry or load or remove programs & drivers, which might be causing the problems.

When the computer starts up keep pressing the F8 key to get the Windows Advanced Options menu. Using the ARROW keys select Safe Mode and press ENTER. Apart from safe mode there are more options in the Windows Advance Options menu.

START YOUR COMPUTER BY USING THE LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION:

When the computer starts up keep pressing the F8 key to get the Windows Advanced Options menu. Using the ARROW keys select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) and press ENTER.

Last Known Good Configuration uses information that was saved the last time you shut down your computer to restore registry settings and drivers. You can use this feature only if you are able to start your computer successfully. Last Known Good Configuration can recover configuration problems such as newly installed drivers that may be incorrect for your computer's hardware and does not correct missing or corrupt drivers or system files.

START THE SYSTEM RESTORE TOOL AT COMMAND PROMPT:

Restart the computer and keep pressing the F8 key to get the Windows Advanced Options menu. Using the ARROW keys select Safe Mode with command prompt and press ENTER.

Log on to the computer at command prompt using an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials. Type the following command at command prompt and press ENTER.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Follow the instructions that are displayed to restore your system.

TROUBLESHOOTING A STOP (0X00000000) ERROR IN WINDOWS XP:

These errors are caused by faulty hardware or corrupt software. When you get this blue screen stop error, read it carefully for possible cause of the error. It displays a code (0X00000000) with some text. You need to note the code carefully and refer to Microsoft Site http://support.microsoft.com/ for the cause and solution.

USING THE DRIVER ROLL BACK FEATURE:

You can use the driver roll back feature if you have installed a new device driver that causes your computer to be unsound. Driver Roll Back feature enables you to reinstate a device driver by using an earlier installed version.

Start device manager by double-clicking system in the control panel, click hardware, then click device manager, double-click the device, click driver tab and then click the Roll Back Driver button.

REPAIR THE XP INSTALLATION:

Disable antivirus program and BIOS-level antivirus protection (can refer the system manual to disable in BIOS) and change the boot device to CD/DVD.

Insert the Windows XP CD in the drive and restart the system.

"Press any key to boot from CD" appears, press a key. The computer starts booting from the Windows XP CD.

You will come to a screen that displays "To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER" "To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R" "To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3"

Press ENTER.

Accept the Licensing Agreement by pressing F8 key.

Now it will display a screen "To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R" "To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press ESC"

Press R.

MSCONFIG:

Click Start, then Run, type msconfig in the box, and click OK.

Under Startup tab, you get a option to load or not to load a particular program at startup, by selecting the check box or by unselecting the check box before the program in the list.

Under Services tab, you get the option to load or not to load the services at startup by selecting the check box before the services in the list. You also have a check box to hide all Microsoft services, if this check box is selecting, it will hide all Microsoft services and only non-Microsoft services will be visible.

Under General tab, there is a option Diagnostic Startup - load basic devices and services only. When used this option, device drivers and software are loaded interactively when you restart. This option temporarily disables some Microsoft services and permanently deletes all restore points. So if you want to maintain you restore points do not use this option.

Under General tab, there is another option Selective Startup. You can choose the files and the settings that you want the computer to load when you restart by select any of the following options:

  • Process SYSTEM.INI File
  • Process WN.INI file
  • Load System Services
  • Load Startup Items

Do not clear the Use Original BOOT.INI check box.

Do not clear the Load System Services check box, this will temporarily disables some Microsoft services and permanently deletes all restore points. So if you want to maintain you restore points do not use this option.

    TROUBLE SHOOTING TIPS:
    • Check logs in the event viewer to see if there is any event that can be of assistance to you to find out which device or driver is causing trouble.

    • Check the BIOS settings to see if the devices are enabled.

    • Check if the power cables are properly connected and switched on.

    • Does the problem occurs during the execution of any particular program.

    • Is the problem related to any device or application?

    • During what conditions does it occur?

    • Has it occurred in the past, if yes then what measures were adapted?

    • Which software was recently installed and did it work correctly in the past.

    • Which hardware was recently installed and did it work correctly in the past.

    • Do these Software/Hardware work fine on other systems.
